About Résumé Case Studies Navigation

Have you ever found yourself visiting a new city unsure of what to explore? Your first thought, likely, is to use app to find the most popular restaurants to eat at or landmarks that everybody always visits. But those apps are for tourists... Why not live like a local? Caronival pulls from local events based on your location (entered or GPS) and can even direct you there.

HackNC 2018
24-Hour Hackathon
5 October - 7 October, 2018
  • Challenges
  • My team and I only had 24 hours to complete the project.
  • I was the only student from my university that attended, so I had to work with a team of people I had never met or worked with previously.
  • None of us were familiar with developing React Native applications, but even with our limited knowledge, we still knew it worked best for the problem we were trying to solve.
  • User Research & Target Audience
User Information
Who is the ideal user?
  • Preferably 18+ or 21+
  • Loves to travel, perhaps prefers smaller-known experiences versus the average tourist experience while traveling.
  • Is planning a vacation or is actively on vacation and wants more ideas on places to explore.
  • Alternatively, user leads a “digital nomad” lifestyle and does not stay in one location for too long.
Motivations
Why would the user use this app?
  • Wants to travel somewhere new, but does not want to only do tourist activities.
  • Perhaps a preplanned activity goes awry, so the user needs to create newer plans, potentially last-minute.
What would motivate the user to continue using this app?
  • Easy-to-understand features with well-organized and accurate information.
  • If used once and user is brought to a fun restaurant, event, and/or outing, it would encourage the user to find more information using the app.
Constraints
What would be the reason(s) the user stops using or uninstalls the app?
  • Choice paralysis - too many options could lead to this psychological phenomenon where a person feels overwhelmed by the number of things to choose from, leading to the inability to make a decision.
  • The user had a bad experience at a restaurant, event, and/or during an outing after utilizing the app once and no longer trusts it.
  • The app currently only functions in North America, meaning it will not work outside of the continent — if the user is traveling outside of North America, the app is not needed.

  • Results
  • Won 2nd Place Overall + Best Use of HERE API + Best Use of Algolia API + Best Use of Wolfram Alpha challenges!
  • My team and I learned the basics of React Native in a 24-hour period.
  • All of my teammates and I were trying to do our own thing and hope it would come together in the end, but better communication and teamwork got us with a better final product.
